Ruth Makandiwa, through the Agape Family Care hosted a two-day Skills Training Program from the 28th to the 29th of March 2019 at the Kingston House in Harare CBD with the tagline “Empowering Women’s Creative Skills For Sustainable Livelihoods” as part of the Women’s Month commemorations.
The main thrust of this program was to empower and educate women on ways they can sustain themselves by learning special skills that they can use to create jobs for themselves.
Ruth Makandiwa has arisen to be an advocate for women empowerment in the nation of Zimbabwe and beyond. In line with the UFIC Theme for this Year, which is the Year of Creativity, Ruth Makandiwa created a platform for women to gather and harness skills that will bring out the creative ability in them which will enable them to be financially independent and contribute to the crafts industry.
A total of 150 women of different ages attended the skills training program, some coming from as far as Kwekwe, Murehwa, Masvingo, Chinhoyi and South Africa and Agape Family Care being a registered Private Voluntary Organization, this program was open to all people from different denominations.
The delegates to the skills training program where trained by a team of four professional crafts people who mastered the art of beading and macrame weaving.
“In the Shona culture, there is a saying which goes “…Musha Mukadzi…” (meaning a woman upholds a household) so if we empower women, we have empowered the whole nation” Mr Silas Nyamandu, one of the trainers said during the training on the first day.
Mr Nyamandu went on to encourage the delegates to not to look down upon themselves but to believe in themselves and to always have a driving force in them that pushes them to master any new skill and to go for excellence.
“All this is evidence that the woman of God; Ruth Makandiwa has women at heart. For her to organize such a program for women, it shows that she desires to see women and the girl child empowered.” Mrs Prisca Sobela, one of the beading trainers said.
On the first day of the training session, the delegates were grouped into pairs and each pair was given the materials that they were going to use throughout the training. During the first session of the training program, the delegates were taught on the art of beading, from the initial stage of knowing the type of beads up to creating a design. During the second session, the women were trained on the art of weaving macrame bags. The second day saw the women working tirelessly to perfect the beading and macrame weaving skills.
Considering the current unemployment rate in Zimbabwe, the skills and training program organized by Ruth Makandiwa through the Agape Family Care will go a long way in enabling these women to create jobs for themselves and be financially independent and usher them into profitable markets within the small to medium enterprises sector. The skills training program is an ongoing program and the delegates were grouped for further communication and training.
Over the years, Ruth Makandiwa has been working towards providing assistance to elderly women who can no longer fend for themselves. Every month, Ruth gives rental allowances and groceries to thousands of elderly women and widows in Zimbabwe.
Ruth Makandiwa is a woman on a mission to transform the lives of women in Zimbabwe through empowerment and by helping them to realize their full potential through training programs and seminars.
